We do not farm because we have to. So why do we farm?
Our family went through a season of being sick. Nothing major, just antibiotic after antibiotic and never really feeling well. We also lived on fast food and junk. My husband and I had an infant and a toddler at the time and were extra motivated for their sake.
We stumbled upon several different food documentaries that came out around 2011. Very quickly we learned how deadly the western diet was, how food is medicine and what we had really been feeding our bodies.
Time for a change!
So we bought a juicer and started juicing, and cutting our diet down to entirely plant based. This was NOT easy but we started to feel better almost immediately. One by one different fast food places got marked off the list as we made the connection when we were there and felt so badly. We had to learn to actually cook with what was in season from local farms around us and start our own life garden.
Fast forward 11 years later, we have a thriving farm business growing/doing/teaching all the things that helped us. I want my kids to always be able to go out into the garden and eat food off the plant without having to wash it. I never want to question what has been done to our food.
We now grow tons of microgreens, all the seasonal veggies we can in the greenhouse (about to be 2 greenhouses) and a half acre garden plot. We have 190 chickens who live outside in the sun eating bugs, grass and garden scraps. 4 grass fed cattle who know they get fed at the garden fence all the parts of the plant that humans don't want. We make and sell Kombucha (which was a huge game changer for our gut health) and Elderberry Syrup to combat viruses and seasonal allergies.
We are DEEPLY passionate about real food. Food grown regeneratively without chemicals. Food raised in community with other animals and plants.
We love to have field trips and group tours here on the farm to teach why we do what we do and how it heals our bodies. We farm to heal our bodies and others! My advice is to study your diet and see what isn't serving your body.
And to get to know your local farmers who can passionately feed you the best food possible.
